Stamford, CT, February 5th, 2014 – The Stamford St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has selected Joseph J. Tooher, Jr., to serve as Grand Marshal of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
We are pleased to announce that the Grand Marshal for the 2014 Stamford St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be Joseph J. Tooher, Jr. On his role as Grand Marshal, Joe remarked, “I was greatly honored to be selected as the Grand Marshal for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Stamford, as most communities, celebrates this tradition which pays tribute to the significant role the Irish, along with other ethnic groups, have played in Stamford and this country.”
Joe is a Stamford native and a graduate of Stamford High, Class of ’48; The University of Connecticut and University of Connecticut Law School. Joe’s commitment to making Stamford a better place starts with over fifty years of involvement in politics: as chairman of the Democratic party in 1963, through numerous mayoral and senatorial campaigns. His community involvement has included the State Judiciary committee, co-founding of the Southern Fairfield Chapter of UConn and numerous other distinctions. Joe was a founding partner of Tooher, Wocl & Leydon, where he is currently of counsel.
The Parade Committee will honor Joe at the annual Grand Marshal’s Dinner on Friday evening, March 7th, at the Sheraton, Stamford, beginning at 6:30pm. Admission is open to all, and tickets are $99 per person until Feb. 21st, and $125.00 thereafter. Tickets include a beer and wine cocktail hour, dinner, entertainment, prizes, and a cash bar. This year’s entertainment will be provided by the Greenwich Pipe Band and the Lenihan School of Irish Dance.
The Parade is funded completely by the private sector and relies on the generosity of local businesses and individuals. In addition to supporting the Grand Marshal’s charity of choice, proceeds help offset the expenses of the Parade. This year’s Grand Marshal, Joe Tooher, chose as his charity the State Street Debating Society Scholarship Fund, which awards one college scholarship per year to a student of AITE, Trinity Catholic, Stamford High or Westhill High School.
This year will follow last year’s parade route, beginning on Main Street at Columbus Park, proceeding East on Main Street, then making a left onto Atlantic Street.
From there it will proceed North on Atlantic Street and continue onto Bedford Street making a right on Walton Place where it will end.
Community organizations or marching units interested in participating in the parade are asked to contact Michael Feighan at StamfordStPatricksday2013@gmail.com or 203-614-9448.
