PRESS RELEASE/MEDIA ALERT

Subject:  Grand Marshal for 2018 St. Patrick’s Day Parade Announced

On Wednesday, January 11, 2018, the Stamford St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee announced its Grand Marshal for the 2018 parade.  This year’s selection is United States Senator Christopher Murphy (D-CT).  Chris Murphy is a fifth generation Irish-American, his family having lived in Connecticut since his great great grandparents emigrated to Norwich from Ireland during the mid-1800s. His early ancestors worked in the Norwich area mills, with later generations turning to the construction trades.  In the U.S. Senate, Chris has become a leading voice for U.S.-Irish relations as a member of the Foreign Relations Committee.  And as a member of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Murphy helps ensure continued U.S. assistance toward an enduring peace in Northern Ireland.  He graduated from Williams College and the University of Ct School of Law.  He is married to Catherine Holahan, an attorney and they look forward to bringing their young sons, Owen and Rider, the sixth generation of Connecticut Murphy’s, to their ancestral homeland soon.

The annual Stamford St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018 in downtown Stamford, starting at noon.  According to AmericanTowns Media, this St. Patrick’s Day parade is ranked #7 in the Best Things Connecticut; Best Places to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, “this parade is a truly authentic Irish experience”.  It is also the largest annual parade in the city of Stamford based on the over 75 units and 2000+ marchers.
