Projects to Begin that Will Continue the Transformation of the Stamford Downtown Neighborhood

The Stamford Downtown neighborhood will soon witness the start of two, catalytic mixed-use developments and a critical, Complete Streets Project. Combined these projects will result in the construction of:

  • Almost 500 new residential units
  • Approximately 10,000 square feet of retail and amenity space
  • The re-alignment of a prominent roadway intersection that will vastly improve the pedestrian environment
  • Creation of new open space highlighted by a curated landscaping and a permanent dining area
  • Traffic calming measures along Bedford Street.

Once complete these projects will prove transformational. Construction activities will result in altered traffic patterns. The City of Stamford and Stamford Downtown will provide regular updates to assist property owners, residents, visitors and business owners during this time.

Bedford and Forest Pedestrian Safety and Plaza Project

This project consists of three elements that are designed to improve pedestrian safety and connectivity along that portion of Bedford Street near the Avon Theater.

Element One
The current parking lot on Bedford and Forest Streets has been transformed, temporarily, into outdoor dining space for the last five years. The Transportation, Traffic & Parking Department as part of its commitment to improving public space will transform this parking lot into a public plaza. The new 9,500 square foot plaza will include green space, 19 new trees utilizing silva cell technology to ensure long lasting growth and health of trees, public seating, and space for outdoor dining for restaurants.

Element Two
The new plaza will complement the reconstruction of the intersection of Forest Street and Prospect Street composed of a new 50-foot-wide raised crosswalk spanning Forest Street connecting the new plaza to Latham Park forming one cohesive public space. The crosswalk at Forest and Prospect Streets has one of the highest rates of pedestrian crashes in Stamford.

Element Three
The City of Stamford will also install a new traffic signal at Bedford + Spring Streets and Bedford + Forest Streets. Furthermore, the project calls for raising the crosswalks crossing Bedford Street at Spring Street and Bedford Street at Forest Street to improve ADA accessibility, but also to slow vehicles down on Bedford Street.

The total project cost is $3,000,000. Visitors to Downtown may expect lane and sidewalk closures as work begins. Police officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control. The project is currently out to bid for construction. Construction is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2025 and be completed in the spring/summer of 2026.

130 Broad Street

The F. D. Rich Company is constructing The Coastline, which will add 200 super luxe, rental apartments to Stamford Downtown. The thirteen-story project will include a rooftop pool and an expansive amenity complex, producing hotel-like living for its tenants. Residents will experience hotel-like living daily. Ground floor will feature 4,400 square feet of prime retail. The developer anticipates completion by November 2027.

The project will impact westbound traffic along Broad Street and access to the Bedford Street Garage during construction. Both the City of Stamford and Stamford Downtown will provide stakeholders with regular updates and traffic advisories.

74 Broad Street

RMS 74 Broad Street, LLC’s is redeveloping the former Burlington Coat Factory site with the construction of a seven-story residential community with 280 apartments and approximately 5,000 square feet of amenity space.
Demolition of the former Burlington Coat Factory site is now complete. Construction will begin before the close of the Summer 2025.  Both the City of Stamford and Stamford Downtown will provide stakeholders with regular construction updates and traffic advisories, ad needed.
