SUMMARY:The Hidden History of Slavery in New York Film Screening and Local History Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an important and illuminating afternoon featuring two powerful speakers whose work brings hidden histories into the light—both nationally and right here in Stamford. \n🎬 Award-Winning Film Screening & Q&A \nLarry Epstein\, two-time Emmy Award–winning journalist and documentary producer\, will present his filmThe Hidden History of Slavery in New York\, winner of an award at the 67th Annual New York Emmy Awards. \nWritten\, produced\, and researched by Epstein\, this 30-minute documentary confronts a largely untold chapter of American history: New York City’s central role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Through the lens of high school student Richard French IV\, the film explores how slavery was deeply rooted in the North—revealing New Amsterdam as a major epicenter and Wall Street as the country’s largest slave market in the 17th and 18th centuries. The film features Bryan Stevenson\, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative\, offering critical historical context that challenges what many of us were taught in school. \nA Q&A with Larry Epstein will follow the screening. \n🗣 Local History\, Personal Legacy \nOur second speaker\, Bria Scott\, brings history home through her ongoing family research. Bria is a descendant of Henry Scott\, a Stamford resident and active member of the city’s working community during a time when Black residents faced profound barriers to visibility and opportunity. \nThrough newly uncovered documentation\, photographs\, and newspaper coverage—including features in The Advocate—Bria has traced her ancestor’s civic engagement\, labor activism\, and participation in a May Day protest in Stamford. These images and records place Henry Scott directly within the city’s social and labor justice history. \nAs Bria shares\, these stories matter not just to her family\, but to Stamford itself—representing the everyday lives\, courage\, and dignity of Black residents whose contributions shaped the city\, even when they were not formally celebrated. \n✨ This Black History Month\, we invite you to learn\, reflect\, and engage with history that is too often overlooked—yet deeply essential. \n📅 Friday\, February 28⏰ 2–4 PM📍Stamford History Center \n🎟 $15 General Admission\, $10 Admission for SHC Members

SUMMARY:Josh Yavneh & The Suspects\, Soft Spot\, + The Boardlords
DESCRIPTION:Josh Yavneh isn’t reinventing the wheel\, he’s putting his own spin on it. This veteran to the New York music scene takes old Americana and makes it new. With a tip of the hat to the likes of Bob Dylan\, Neil Young\, Howlin Wolf\, and Kurt Cobain\, Yavneh has shaped his eclectic catalogue to echo sounds of the past. \nThe Boardlords are a loud\, fast\, gloriously unhinged skate-punk band from Port Chester\, NY; thrashing stages (and the occasional skateboard) for over 25 years. Formed in 2000 at The Radillac — a local watering hole owned by vocalist Steve Moy — and the neighboring Studio/Clubhouse run by guitarist Dan Walsh\, the band quickly became a staple of the tri-state punk scene. \nSoft Spot is a Stamford based rock band soft spot is comprised of three gentlemen with a mission to take you through the stars. Drawing influence from iconic rock bands like Alice In Chains\, Hum\, and Superheaven\, soft spot has made an undeniable impact with its moody\, expansive sound\, and has begun to win over listeners beyond the U.S.\, most recently garnering attention in South America and Europe.

SUMMARY:Stamford’s Visible History: 250 Years of Independence and Evolution
DESCRIPTION:An illustrated talk by architectural historian Wes Haynes \nCelebrating 250 years of progression and evolution\, this captivating program tells the stories of Stamford through architectural form\, from aqueducts to bridges\, factories to lighthouses\, commercial properties\, and stately residential homes. \n“Independence sparked Stamford’s 250 year transformation from an isolated rural colony into today’s vibrant city\, says Wes Haynes. “Today this story hides in plain sight in the places where we live\, work and play.” In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, Haynes has planned a virtual tour of the existing buildings\, structures\, and monuments\, and the stories of the people and forces – immigration\, industries\, and technological innovations – that shaped our city over that time. \nA Stamford native with a long career as a historic preservation specialist in the tri-state region\, Wes Haynes studies historic places and works with their owners on how to adapt them to new uses and keep them in good repair. Today he continues to serve on many boards\, lending his substantial knowledge to organizations like Emerson Hall Foundation\, whose mission is to safeguard a 155 year old downtown church and honor its historic place in the community. Now known also as Emerson Hall\, the Foundation seeks to provide a space for artists\, musicians\, and educators to gather\, create\, and share their work in the vibrancy of modern-day Stamford. \nTo help with the preservation of Emerson Hall\, donations in any amount will be accepted. $25 recommended. To donate in advance and reserve a seat click use this URL: https://secure.givelively.org/event/emerson-hall-foundation-inc/a-visible-memory-of-stamford-s-history. SUMMARY:Winter Sound Bath with NTHNL
DESCRIPTION:The Harmonic Mindfulness Soundbath is a 75-minute deep listening and meditation experience designed to support relaxation\, emotional release\, and inner healing. For this Soundbath\, we will ground into the stillness and quietude that the winter offers us while cultivating the inner warmth that keeps us inspired. \nThe session begins with a grounding meditation that invites awareness of the sounds around and within\, followed by a brief reading from a sacred text. From there\, participants are gently guided into a rich soundscape composed of NTHNL’s original field recordings and electronically generated binaural beats; crafted to quiet the mind and facilitate inner expansion and journeying. The sounds will be those of the hearth\, of the warm cozy spaces we return to after venturing out into the cold. \nOver this ambient foundation\, NTHNL performs live on a variety of wind instruments\, weaving a soothing\, immersive musical journey. The experience is a carefully choreographed healing composition that flows effortlessly through distinct sonic spaces\, supporting introspection\, presence\, and deep inner transformation.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Fire & Ice Winter Festival
DESCRIPTION:Stamford Downtown has made the decision to cancel the Fire & Ice Winter Festival scheduled for Saturday\, January 24\, 2026\, due to extreme cold temperatures forecasted for the area. The safety and comfort of families\, visitors\, performers\, artists\, vendors\, and staff is our top priority. With dangerously low temperatures predicted\, conditions are not suitable for an outdoor community event of this scale. \nThe good news: while the festival itself has been canceled\, the ice sculptures will still be installed in Columbus Park\, allowing residents\, workers\, and visitors to safely enjoy the artwork throughout the weekend and beyond (until they melt!). Guests are encouraged to view the sculptures at their leisure and dine at the surrounding restaurants.
