In these classes\, Matthew Broad teaches Djembe hand positions\, simple rhythms that sound amazing together and helps you to experience the connection between drumming rhythm and every day life. \nThe definition of Djembe is “everyone gather together in peace”. Djembe drum circles can feel meditative and peaceful and nurture a sense of friendship and community. \nAt the end of this 5 session class series\, you will know how to play different Djembe rhythms that will stay with you for the rest of your life. \nDropping in on one or more classes is welcome or sign up for all the classes and save. \nDrums are provided. No experience is necessary although experienced drummers may join to practice and immerse in the beats. Lessons will progress and build one session upon the next. \n$35/class or\n$140 for all 5 session pre paid. \nSign up in advance is required.

Through the lens of high school student Richard French IV\, the film explores how slavery was deeply rooted in the North—revealing New Amsterdam as a major epicenter and Wall Street as the country’s largest slave market in the 17th and 18th centuries.The film features Bryan Stevenson\, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative\, offering critical historical context that challenges what many of us were taught in school. \nA Q&A with Larry Epstein will follow the screening. \n🗣 Local History\, Personal Legacy \nOur second speaker\, Bria Scott\, brings history home through her ongoing family research. Bria is a descendant of Henry Scott\, a Stamford resident and active member of the city’s working community during a time when Black residents faced profound barriers to visibility and opportunity. \nThrough newly uncovered documentation\, photographs\, and newspaper coverage—including features in The Advocate—Bria has traced her ancestor’s civic engagement\, labor activism\, and participation in a May Day protest in Stamford.
